Panthers win first state wrestling title in school history

POINT PLEASANT � Point Boro knew there would be plenty of toss-up bouts from 125 pounds through 152. But even after the Panthers lost four of those bouts to fall behind by double digits, they were far from worried. Not with the collection of wrestlers still waiting to take the mat.
Starting with a 3-1 decision by Sean Casey at 160, the host Panthers won four straight bouts including a huge pin by Skylar Engelken at 171 and a dramatic 4-3, four-overtime victory by Gage Bongiovi at 215 to defeat Cinnaminson, 31-26, and capture the NJSIAA South Jersey Group II championship on Thursday night. It is the first sectional championship in school history.
"We knew 125 was a good place to start the match because we could end with our stronger weights," Engelken said. "From 160 up we knew we had it. And Gage's bout was the biggest of the night."
Casey scored a takedown with seven seconds left to take a 3-1 decision from Terrance Roach. Engelken fired up the home crowd when he took Mark Wojcik to his back with a double-leg takedown and pinned him in 2:32. Kyle Coleman followed with a 9-3 decision over Dan Reed to pull the Panthers (20-3) within 17-16.
Bongiovi's opponent was Mitch Sparks, a transfer from Shawnee who was second in the Region VII tournament at 215 last season. After a scoreless first period, Bongiovi escaped to start the second after choosing bottom. Sparks quickly reversed him but Bongiovi was awarded a penalty point after Sparks used an illegal move. He escaped again to take a 3-2 lead into the third period. Sparks escaped early in the third period to set up overtime. Neither wrestler could secure a takedown or escape from the other's grasp until Bongiovi finally got to his feet in the fourth overtime period for a thrilling 4-3 victory.
"That's gut-check time right there," Bongiovi said. "With all the conditioning we do I could have went 12 minutes."
"If Gage doesn't get that win we have to make some moves that we didn't want to make," Panthers head coach Kyle Franey said.
Instead, the Panthers were in great shape in holding a 19-17 advantage. Marty Infante did his job at heavyweight and avoided giving up six points to Justin Embler. He fought off a cradle in the third period and dropped a 10-7 decision. That meant Franey didn't have to bump up freshman Jordan Beverly to 119 to face state place-winner Jerry DeSanto. After Pat Hunt received a forfeit at 103, Beverly clinched the title with a 42-second pin of Steve DeLuca. DeSanto received a meaningless forfeit as the Panthers stormed the mat to celebrate.
"I didn't want just a decision there, I wanted to come off the mat with a pin," Beverly said. "This is so big for this program and I so happy to be a part of it. We still have one more day of wrestling, though."
The Panthers will face South Plainfield, No. 2 in the Gannett New Jersey Top 10, in the semifinals of the Group II tournament at 10 a.m. on Sunday at the Ritacco Center.
